What a fabulous day we have had today with our Athletics Carnival. It is always so great to see our students compete in these events and trying their best. We saw some really wonderful examples of great sportsmanship and I was very proud of our students' behaviour throughout the day. Congratulations to Dulgan who were our winning house for the day. Thank you to all the families who were able to come along and join in with the spirit of the day. A very special thanks to Mr P, Mrs Rowe and Mr Christie who did all the planning for the day.
Today was our last day for Miss Durnford in Prep Bilbies as she is taking off a couple of weeks to get married to her partner Connor. We will welcome her back next term as Mrs Harding. We wish her and Connor all the best for their wedding and for a lifetime of love and happiness ahead.
Please check out our Learning and Teaching Advisor, Mrs Aleesha Rockemer’s article in this newsletter about how to understand your child’s report card that will be sent out next week.
Next week, we have the second game for the State of Origin. Students are again invited to wear their Maroon or Blue colours on Wednesday for the Men’s game or Thursday for the Women’s game which is being played here in Townsville.
Have a fabulous weekend. Last week til the holidays and everyone gets a break from school!
Cheers
Penny
Wow - well done to Dulgan. What a great Athletics carnival. It was so wonderful to see the big smiles on kids faces and to see them sharing such great sportsmanship with each other. Our Parent, Teacher Student relay race is a highlight for me - the camaraderie and competition is tangible. A big shout out to our P&F who do such a wonderful job with running the sausage sizzle and keeping everyone’s tummies happy. It definitely brings another level to the day and it wouldn’t be possible without all our volunteers.
Thanks
Ros
Report Cards
On Monday 19th June from about 2:30pm, you will be able to view your child's Semester One Report Card on the Compass Portal. This report will display your child's ‘academic achievement’, as well as their ‘commitment to learning’ for each Learning Area. To better understand your child's report card, please note the following:
Ensure you understand the 5 scale marking system
- Prep and Year 1 grades are reported as 'Applying (AP), Making Connections (MC), Working With (WW), Exploring (EX), or Becoming Aware (BA).
- Year 2 to 6 are reported as A, B, C, D or E.
- A WW/C is an indication that your child has achieved the year level curriculum that is being assessed; your child has achieved well for their year level.
- A EX/D and a BA/E indicates that your child has achieved below year level expectations.
- A MC/B and a AP/A indicates that your child has achieved above year level expectations.
Has my child gone backwards?
- Your child may receive a different grade to last year, or they may be achieving below the year level expectations; this does not automatically mean they have regressed in their learning. Each new year students are assessed against a new Achievement Standard from the Australian Curriculum. Therefore, students can progress in their learning, but it may not necessarily be reflected in their ‘academic grade.’ It is best to talk to your child's teacher if you are concerned about your child's progress in their learning.
Focus on Effort over Grades
- Your child's 'Commitment to Learning' mark is by far one of the most important aspects of every child's report card! It is the aspect of their schooling that they have the most direct control over. If your child is focused on trying their best and feels that their efforts are seen and valued, they are going to be much more resilient learners. Resilient learners enjoy learning, continue to challenge themselves and are more comfortable making mistakes, regardless of their grade.
Know your child
- All of us understand our own children’s strengths and weaknesses, the things that make them unique, their special interests and their attitudes. Please remember that the Semester Report Card is one form of feedback about your child’s achievement and progress at school.
Thank you to all of our teachers at St Benedict's for the time, effort and commitment it takes to write Semester Report Cards. We hope you enjoy reading them. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to email your child’s teacher.

In this edition of SchoolTV - PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & EXERCISE
In the last decade, children’s participation in physical activity and exercise has been in decline. In this digital age, children are using computers and mobile devices, not only for learning, but for relaxation and recreation purposes. This sedentary lifestyle is having a detrimental effect on today’s youth. The key is finding the balance.
Research shows, that regular physical activity and exercise leads to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, enhances learning and improves academic outcomes. Playing sport helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. Parents play an important role in helping children establish positive habits that will benefit their children in the long-term.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice relating to the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise, as well as tips on how to get their kids motivated and moving more.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.
