Prep excursion and Year 4 Camp
This week our Prep students have enjoyed their very first school excursion where they went to Sacred Heart Cathedral and Jezzine Barracks. They had a fabulous time and came back quite exhausted. Our Year 4’s have headed up to Gumburu at Paluma for an overnight camp where they have experienced some cool weather and drizzle but have thoroughly enjoyed their experience in such a beautiful location. It is wonderful to see our children engaging in such interesting learning experiences in our wider community.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our year 3 and Year 5 students who have participated in NAPLAN this week. While the assessments are intensive over the three days, they are not completely out of the normal experience for students and we were very proud of their efforts to do their best. We generally find that NAPLAN affirms what we already know about our students in terms of their literacy and numeracy understanding.
Walk/Ride to School
Thank you to all our parents, students and staff who participated in Walk/Ride to School Day. We’d love to discuss some ideas around increasing the number of times we can do these days to increase our students road safety awareness, to increase the number of kids who ride and walk to school (even part-way is an advantage for their health and also for our car park)We could make this an agenda item at an upcoming P&F Meeting.
Building Project- Stage 2
Well, we are off and running with our Stage 2 building project with Gabcom already on site and establishing their setups. It looks like next week they will be ready to pour concrete foundations for our two new classroom blocks and they are hoping to set up for our Admin block extension too. A change in the schedule to bring the Admin Block forward in timing means we can get to the carpark near the Kindy in a more effective way. This is going to mean some temporary pain for long term gain, particularly for our Kindy families. We are going to need to fence off the car park near the Kindy so the builders can access the Admin area that is being extended. This area will need to be accessed from Bishop Putney Avenue so the walking path from the car park near Kindy will be blocked. For safe access to the Kindy entrance, we will need Kindy families to access Kindy by walking up through the school grounds and turn towards Kindy just past the Admin Block and follow the path indicated by the construction fencing due to go up next week. We appreciate how frustrating and inconvenient this may be but we will continue to make decisions in the best interests of all especially when it comes to safety during this project.
Under 8’s Day- In our Garden
All students from Prep to Year 3 will be participating in some morning activities next week on Friday 24 May to celebrate the early years of learning. We are looking forward to our Kindy kids and our 2020 Prep kids joining us for the morning.
Have a lovely weekend, don’t forget to vote!
Cheers Penny
What Zone Am I In?
In Zones of Regulation lessons, the students will be learning how to tell when they themselves or someone else is in a specific zone – what does the yellow zone look like for example. Specifically, we want the students to be able to pick when they heading into particular zones so they can start to learn to manage their own emotions and behaviours.
The students may watch short segments from familiar children's movies or listen to various stories that provide a context where they are able to pick what zone each character is in, based on how they are behaving and the way they look.
Students will then have the opportunity to think about how certain situations may put them into certain zones.
For example, when asked “Who likes storms?” – some students may love them and find them exciting (yellow zone), and others may find them scary and become upset during them (blue zone). Students will learn that everyone has different feelings about the same event and that this is okay.
